First stage of the Camino de Santiago
Hondarribia is also the starting point of the Northern Way of St James, and has seen thousands of pilgrims pass through, leaving their mark on its streets and buildings. With the Bidasoa river flowing into the Cantabrian Sea on one side and Mount Jaizkibel on the other, it offers endless options to visitors.
Santa María Gate and the Main Street
The Santa María Gate, on the south side of the wall, is the most important entrance to the town. The Calle Mayor is home to the Town Hall, the Zuloaga Palace, the Casadevante House and the Church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano. At the end of the street, in the Plaza de Armas, stands the Palace of Charles V.
Walls and bastions
The town wall, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, preserves four bastions: San Nicolás, La Reina, San Felipe and Santiago. In the La Marina district you will find countless bars and restaurants famous for their cuisine.
