Herri Kirolak is the name given to Basque rural sport, a set of disciplines full of history and character that are still contested today in Hondarribia and across the Basque Country.
Estropadak (rowing boats)
Trainera rowing dates back to the 17th century, linked to the old whale hunting. Today it has become an exciting league between the towns of the Basque coast that fills every summer with atmosphere.
Pilota
Basque pelota has been popular in the Basque Country since the 13th century. Hondarribia hosts the Gran Slam Jai-Alai championship between September and October.
Aizkora, Harrijasoketa and more
The aizkolari chops logs with an axe in the shortest time; the harrijasotzaile lifts heavy stones to the shoulder. To these are added harrizulaketa (rock drilling) and sega (grass cutting with a scythe).
